As internal social media (ISM) becomes more prevalent in the workplace, how is this impacting employee engagement? We believe creating communities of employees within your enterprise and communicating with them using social media tools is an important element in building and empowering engaged employees.

APCO studies and works with clients on employee engagement. Our research indicates that several factors contribute to engaged employees. Foremost is that the executive team supports and lives the enterprise’s values. Engaged employees seek organizations where they feel comfortable sharing information and ideas, where executive communication is open and honest and where they have the information necessary to do their jobs.

These factors can be incorporated into an enterprise’s internal communication, community building and ISM plans.

Drawing on our employee engagement research and internal communication best practices, we developed a list of attributes of ISM. Using factor analysis, our ISM Model isolated 21 discrete attributes that characterize the best programs, which in turn combine to form the three major factors that employees look for when deciding whether their company has effective social media internally.
